Women have been given the go ahead to drink after the first three months of pregnancy and nano burgers are included in the new healthy living plan; but will this annual change-around ruin your diet plans?

Its not a miracle cure so please sit down. It probably doesn’t have a release schedule on a yearly calendar, but diet fads are something of a national event. They happen, we know people do attempt them because books get published on failed expeditions into them. It also seems that once a year, someone important says something that affects the way expectant mothers handle their social life. This time last year they were encouraged to stop drinking completely and now the restraint is purely for the first three months. It’s not a systematic dismissal of opinion, it’s merely a shock tactic. Remember six years ago when pregnant women were advised against travelling on an aeroplane. As if we weren’t scared enough to go on a plane in 2002.

So the scientists have given us a burger that lowers cholesterol and food packaging that actively deflects bacteria from the product it protects. This is nanotechnology. Simplified, it is the seperation of atoms so they are much more easily controllable. Whether or not you think this is nothing but sci-fi doesn’t explain why our culture is digesting more fads than actual important ideas. The Atkins diet is a clear example of this and presuming that nanotechnology will get off the ground, what is to say it will be a prominent product. It has no clear future. Its just filler. There is a much more worrying sympton that is attached to all of this. It’s a man-made paranoia that almost everyone is trying to avoid. The cynics are telling us to ignore the fads and the optimists are looking for something better; but what about the realists hoping for? Perhaps it is them who are encouraging all of this, or maybe trying to be nonchalent about it all. Don’t ask me though, I’m just a cynic.
